X WORLD CONGRESS OF PSYCHIATRY
-------------------------------
Madrid, August 23-28, 1996.

The X World Congress of Psychiatry, under the Honorary Presidency of
His Majesty Juan Carlos I, King of Spain, is organized by the World
Psychiatric Association in collaboration with the Asociacion Espanola
de Neuropsiquiatria and the Sociedad Espanola de Psiquiatria.

MESSAGE BY THE PRESIDENT
------------------------

"This is to extend a cordial invitation to all psychiatrists and
mental health professionals to participate in the X World Congress of
Psychiatry on August 23-28, 1996 in Madrid.

The theme chosen for this meeting is ONE WORLD, ONE LANGUAGE. In
a world that is increasingly fractionalized by the creation of trade
blocks, ultra nationalistic aspirations, civil wars and the lack of a
common goal, psychiatrists and mental health professionals have to
come together to find ways that can best serve the mentally ill and
to promote mental health. To achieve this goal we need a common
language to enable us to communicate effectively and efficiently.

In the past decades, psychiatry has made significant advances and
the time has come for us to see how these can be better integrated in
ways that can lend credence to the biopsychosocial model.

The choice of the venue is especially meaningful for the WPA. In
1966 the IV World Congress was held in Madrid. Thirty years later
and on our 46th anniversary the WPA will return to Madrid to take
stock of our achievements and to chart a course for our future."

Felice Lieh Mak
President
