CONFERENCE BACKGROUND
This conference seeks to draw together and highlight recent developments
within the social sciences and related disciplines that offer an account
of human activity that transcend purely individualistic or structuralist
accounts of the human condition. Increasingly, psychologists,
sociologists and many others, are recognising that a full account of
social activity necessitates an explanation in terms of both the person
and the world that this person inhabits. It is towards an understanding
of this social world that this conference is addressed.

PUBLICATIONS

ABSTRACTS
Abstracts of all posters, papers, and symposia will be published at the
conference.

JOURNALS
We are currently negotiating with various journals with respect to
establishing a number of special issues centred around presentations at
this event.

UNDERSTANDING THE SOCIAL WORLD (BOOK SERIES)
Current plans for this event include establishing a book series entitled
'Understanding the Social world' centred around presentations at this
event. David Nightingale and John Shotter would edit the series, which
if accepted for publication, would be published by Routledge who have
expressed a provisional interest in this project. We are in the early
stages of coordinating this series but envisage that the following
provisional titles could arise from this event: 'Language/Discourse';
'Embodiment'; 'The Self'; and, 'Subjectivity'. Speakers at this event
will be given every opportunity to contribute to this project - this
could include submitting a proposal for a chapter for one of the above
titles or suggesting alternative titles. Further details regarding this
project will be available around February 1995.

BEST STUDENT PAPER AWARD
If you are interested in entering the Student Paper Award (for which a
cash prize will be given), you must send a full copy of your paper and a
letter from your academic department attesting to your status as a
student. These MUST be received before 1st April 1995.

We invite you to attend this conference and hope you can arrange to
participate in what we are sure will be an exciting and successful
event.
