Much of the brouhaha at the moment is trying to make the same tool (HTML)
address both needs. I'd rather use the right kind of tool for each task.

SGML has its costs and benefits, as does Acrobat. Trying to do both leads
to something like ODA, which is too complex to actually implement and use
effectively.

I'm a great fan of SGML as a means for doing markup--it's great. However,
not all problems are solved by marked up text.
