At the just-concluded Davenport meeting, at which we reviewed
the Docbook DTD, we reluctantly came to the conclusion to use
CALS, as it's supported by SGML tools and as there isn't much
to choose among other table models.  It follows that you might
want to look at the way CALS does table formatting, because 
people might have tools to construct such tables without haveing
(having) to code them by hand.
