E-Mail Management Programs

Analysis of Test Results

Simple Mail Test

All three programs passed this test easily. Although the ability to select recipients from a list makes Netscape Mail and Atis Mail easier to use.

Binary Attachments Test

This test was handled easily by Atis Mail, you just select attach file from the option menu, and you get a browsing window to select the file to attach. Netscape Mail was even easier, there is a button in the header area, that allows you to add files. Both programs automatically Mime encode the file attachments, making sending a file a matter of pointing and clicking. Elm is a completely different story, as there are no methods available to send binary files without encoding them in advance. Elm therefore failed this test.

Alias Handling

All three programs support the creation of aliases in some form. Netscape and Atis both allow simple selection of names from the established directories of mail recipients, but Elm as a very complex subsystem for creating aliases that can be very difficult to use at first.

Saving Messages

Here we see the advantage of the GUI again, with Netscape and Atis providing an easy to navigate listing of mailboxes. Elm on the other hand requires the user to remember the name of the folder they want. Atis Mail also has one feature that makes mail management much easier...message filtering to sort messages into appropriate folders automatically.

Replying and Forwarding

All programs handled replying and forwarding with ease. Atis mail was slightly better here, with its list of reply and forward options.
