Creation of a Document

Basic Features- Title, Header, Paragraph, List, Horizontal Line, and Address Tags

Adding basic features to an HTML document using the editors that we tested was very easy. Learning how to change these items was dependent on the knowledge of the overall environment, but once that was learned there was no difficulty at all in using and changing these features.

Home Page Wizard starts here to show its lack of functionality because there is no feature to add an ADDRESS tag at the end of an HTML document.

Adding Different Links To Your document

There are many different types of links that can be added to an HTML document from links to other pages to mailto links which allow viewers of your page to contact you via e-mail. The best application for adding links of any kind is HotDog Standard.

On the top tool bar of HotDog Pro there are three large buttons specially designed for adding links to your document. Two are designed for creating internal links. The "Target" button is used to insert an anchor in to your document that can be linked to. When you select the "Target" button, a dialog box appears and queries the user for a name which will be used as a reference for the anchor. After filling in the name of the anchor the anchor code is inserted in to the document. When you wish to create an internal link elsewhere in your document you simply have to select the "Internal Link" button from the top button bar. The nice feature here is that a list of all named anchors is given from which you select the internal anchor where you want your link to point to. After selecting the appropriate anchor, the code for the link is inserted in to your document.

External links are made easy via a dialog box that breaks a link in to its composite parts of resource type, host address, port, path, filename, and target(Figure ??). The resource type can be chosen from a pull down list of http, afs, ftp, gopher, file, mailto, news, newsrc, nntp, telnet, and wais. The user then must only fill in the appropriate entry boxes and the URL is combined in a box at the bottom of the dialog. Finally, the user enters a description of what the link should look like on the web page, and the code for the link is inserted in to the document.

A list of past created links is kept at the bottom of the external link dialog saving you from re-entering links that you have used in the past. This type of function is also done in Aardvark Pro. A library of URLs can be kept so that creation of a link is limited to searching for the link in the library and selecting it.

Live Markup attempts to copy HotDog's URL dialog but is not as robust or easy to understand. External links can be added to documents using Home Page Wizard, but the whole link must be typed in as a long string. On the other hand, internal links are supposedly a built in feature of Home Page Wizard, but we could not find out a way to create internal links or targets.
