Thanks to Eric for a clear and thorough exposition of the needs
for superscripts and subscripts. The HTML 3.0 DTD currently has them as:

align (left|center|right) #IMPLIED

NCSA have a working implementation, as do I, although neither of us have
yet implemented support for the ALIGN attribute. I am in favor of adding
the tags to the HTML 2.1 spec if that would speed up widespread deployment.
