Perhaps now would be a good time to revise the proposal, "Handling
Multilingual Documents in the WWW" in light of some of the recent discussions
on this list. There are a number of things that I think could be resolved by
the html-wg and a number of things that belong to the http-wg. Taking
advantage of valuable prior work in SGML and MIME communities can be a real
leg up. I suspect that some of the ideas that need to be resolved on a per
client browser basis may need to be debated on the www-talk alias without the
benefit of a target working group/standards body.
Is there a set of concrete proposals on the table for HTML 2.1 and HTTP 1.1,
that would fulfill the requirements in the multilingual proposal? It's far
more productive to debate the merits of concrete alternatives than to argue
over motives for particular positions.
A few messages back I heard praises for "stirring the pot". Perhaps now that
the heat has been turned up under the pot, it's time to skim off the dross,
and test the quality of the precious metal being refined.
