I don't think that the suggestion has been made "for the sake of
minor simplifications to CALS filters". There are numerous
software packages which are in use today that readily handle
the CALS table model -- for editing and rendering online, in
print and for ICADD. What is the point in doing HTML tables
differently when support for the CALS model is already available?

I am confused by the way that this discussion is proceeding.
I hope that we can/will discuss tables at Danvers next week.
