The best editor that we tested was HotDog Standard. The price of $29.95 US for the version we tested is more than reasonable for all of the functions that are available. It did take a short time period to get used to the editor and a knowledge of HTML was needed, but for our desired audience the functionality and ease of use is unmatched. A built in preview function may be a nice addition in the future, but for now this is a very complete editor.
Live Markup was a very nice editor to use once we had learned how to insert objects in to a file at the position that we wanted it. By being a WYSIWYG it was very easy to keep the format of the page crisp and understandable. It was also nice to be able to view graphics and background images for a file while creating the page. The price for this package is very reasonable considering the ease of use and functionality of this program.
Aardvark Pro hurt itself by not including sufficient help with their demo copy. It took us longer to find out how to use all of the functions available than it took to use those functions. Also, the preview function does not show the graphics that are inserted to a page and in the future it would be better to allow the preview to show these graphics. The price for the registered copy may be justified, but if we were looking to buy based on this demonstration copy we would be looking at the following editors.
The functionality of Home Page Wizard left much to be desired. This application was unable to create forms, tables, straight HTML documents, an address section, and true internal links. Further implementations of this editor should include ways of creating the above HTML items and should also contain a text editor to fix specifics of a document. Home Page Wizard did not give enough functionality for our desired audience, placing it fourth of the four editors that we reviewed. The price of this editor is justified by its functionality.
