IDN
- Integrated Digital Network
A communication network that combines the technologies of digital swwitching and digital transmission of innformation.
ISDN
- Intergrated Services Digital Network
A communication network that uses an integrated digital network to carry all forms of traffic, such as voice, computer data, and facsimile.
ATM
- Asynchronous Transfer Mode
Data transmission where each group of data is preceded by a start signal and is followed by a stop signal.
This is also called Start-Stop Transmission.
Protocol
Bandwidth
Range of frequency available for signaling. The difference expressed in Hertz between the highest and lowest frequencies of a frequency band.
An example of bandwidth would be CJSW. It has a bandwidth of 90.9 MHz.
Broadband
A communications channel having a bandwidth greater than a voice-grade channel, and therefore capable of higher-speed data transmission.
Fibre Optic
A cable made of fine strands of glass along which information is transmitted using pulses of light.
A fibre the thickness of a human hair can deliver 32,000 simultaneous conversations. This can be compared to twisted pair, which can only transmit 12 simultaneous conversations.
