Asimov, consciousness etc.

What a fascinating exchange over the past few days! Perhaps it was Devi's
allusions to AI, but I'm reminded of Dreyfus's retelling of an old joke in
_What computers can't do_ It seems a drunk was found groping for his lost keys
under a streetlight. In response to a constable's questions, he admitted he
didn't think he'd dropped them there but was looking where the light was
better. IMVHO, most of us who exchange ideas here acknowledge that the light's
better in positivism, but that ain't where the keys are. GAK's theoretical
system offers us other options -- flashlights, matches that can burn us if we
hold them too long, lanterns, whatever -- but at least we're not bound by the
damned streetlight which is static and fixed. Just a thought -- S. Huffman
