There's an interesting and surprising article on this topic by Martin
Seligman which is on display on the web-site of the American Psychological
Association. Seligman essentially reviews and recommends a study which is
not the usually idealised double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial,
which would be great if only it could be done without vitiating the
therapy. Instead, he recommends a very well-done example of the
consumer-survey approach.
The study itself is a very intresting approach - and, at another level,
it's most interesting to see Seligman recommending it, and interesting to
see the APA endorsing the recommendation.
