if i were hacking HTNews I'd look at the work being done with the
'nov' News Overview database, which is a set of extensions for
threaded news readers to get back all of the relevant information from
a group (subject, from, date, references, newsgroups lines) in one
transaction, rather than fetching each header set separately.

but i'm not hackign HTNews right now,
