But it isn't.  It's an essential part of reference.  Readers using
different browsers MUST get the same numbering, or they can't talk to
each other usefully about numbered items.  Same goes for readers of
online vs. print versions.  Doc writers MUST be able to specify list
numbering, no two ways about it.
