Won't this force competitors to do the same, bringing everyone back to a
level playing field, while improving the *perceived* performance of the
clients (which is a good UI feature)?

Couldn't you make the same argument against people using T-1s vs. people
using 14.4 connections, since the people with T-1s will request the various
elements faster? So we should all go back to really slow connections, with
the salutory effect of reducing the burstiness of the network and servers?
I just don't think so.
