Glossary

Account Number
- A unique number associated with each customer that is automatically
generated when a customer is created
Add
- Opens a database an allocates space for a new record
Button
- A graphic representation that, when pushed, performs a specific function
Carrier
- A person that delivers newspapers to household customers
Carrier ID
- A unique number identifying a carrier
Control bar
- Contains general functions like add,delete and query.The control
bar is an area on screen where user can point and click mouse to gain access to
these functions or submenus.
Data Entry Screen
- An interface that allows the user to enter data into fields.
Data Field
- Area where user inputs data for a function. Data fields will
accept only a predetermined data type. eg only characters,only numbers.
Delete
- Removes a record from the existing database
Delivery Interface
- Where all delivery functions are available
Drop Box
- A feature of the GUI. The user selects the drop box area and clicks
on it with the pointing device. A menu will be displayed with the possible
choices the user may make. To make a choice the user simply clicks on it with
the pointing device.
Drop Location/Site
- An address where a specific delivery truck stops and delivers publications
General Functions
- A group of functions that work exactly the same way across
all subsystems. The general functions may vary in terms of input and response.
The general functions include: add a record, view/query a record,edit/delete a
record and print a record.
Graphical User Interface
- The GUI interface uses graphical/visual images to
aid the user in interacting with the system. The visual aides usaully occure
in a windows enviroment. The Visual aides include menus,buttons and drop boxes.
Household
- A place or residence for a customer
Household interface
- Where all household functions are available
Menu
- A list of options or choices that a user can make. Choices can be
selected by using a pointing device like a mouse.
Mover Box
- A feature of the GUI. A rectangular box divided into two sections.
The section on the left hand side contains a list of items. The user can move
items from the left hand side to the right hand side using the pointing device.
This enables the user to make multiple selections from a list.
News Box
- A big crappy box that steals your money and is supposed to have newspapers
in it
Print
- Generates a hard copy of the current record displayed in the interface
Product Number
- a unique number that identifies any one of the publication
products that Northam Inc. sells. Products can be magazines and newspapers.
Pull Down Menu
- A method of selecting desired information from a list
Query
- A question or request the user gives to the system. The user supplies
information or search criteria and the system responds with possible matches.
eg find all carriers working in district XXX.
Retail Outlet/Customer
- A business that consigns newspapers and magazines
Route
Update
- Saves changes made on the current record in the database
Zone
- The area of delivery responsiblility of a carrier
Zone/Route Table
- A listing of zone matched with the routes the zones are contained in
