by Robert Loeppky and Michael Hrytsak

As it grows in popularity, many companies are advertising their services on the World-wide Web. To create these advertising/information pages, these companies need to create HTML documents. Instead of taking time to create these documents as straight ASCII files, HTML editors can help create these documents easily, efficiently, and cost-effectively.

The web browsers we reviewed were:

All of these editors were tested on their ability to assist a user, with a slight knowledge of HTML, create World-wide Web pages. These pages consisted of text blocks, headers, hyperlinks, tables, graphical images, and forms. We also considered the ease of decorating these pages with set background and foreground colors. As well as the technical side of things, we tested whether look-and-feel of the paper could be maintained.

After reviewing the editors, we feel that HotDog Standard is the best editor of the four. Not only was this a very reasonably priced editor; this editor supports all current HTML standard functions and Netscape functions and was very intuitive to use.Live Markup was the next best editor because of its WYSIWYG feature and its functionality. Third ranked was Aardvark Pro, not for lack of functionality but, because it was a cumbersome editor to use. The lowest ranked editor was Compuserv's Home Page Wizard because it was unable to produce forms, tables, and true internal links.
