Subject: Status Information - summary?

Back in January there was a discussion on this list about returning
status information with scripts.
Basically the idea was that a script could keep returning extra headers
at various points and these would get displayed by the clients in the
status area. Example:
some headers
Status: Search starting
Status: Search is 10% complete (then a little while later)
...
Status: Search complete
rest of headers
html document
Was a decision ever reached about how feasible this is? Did anyone
attempt to add this?
