I agree. I also think a mechanism like this will first be useful for
automatically generated trees of information, like those made by
LaTeX2HTML.

I thought this resource was well known, but it sounds like it isn't:

This specifies "Made" for author, "Precedes" for next _and_ previous
and a number of others. Shouldn't we take notice to that second
paragraph?
