HTMLed is a very basic editor for Windows 3.x. It is text editor which means you still see all the html tags, but it provides buttons and pulldown menus which can be used to insert the tags. HTMLed has all the basic features one looks for in an editor, but has a little bit of a learning curve. It seems very stable - we did not notice any bugs or glitches during our testing. Overall it is just an average package which I would probably not recommend to someone interested in web page authoring.
There are many features provided by HTMLed. Some nice features are:
Reusable Document Templates - HTMLed comes with a standard document outline which includes all your basic tags. When a new document is created, a dialog allows the user to select which standard elements to include and also enter some initial information. This makes creating a new document much easier
Floating Toolboxes - As well as the normal top-of-the-screen menus, several floating tool boxes are available. These can be very useful when using repetitive tags.
Custom Toolbar - HTMLed allows the user to create a custom toolbar. This is essential in the ever-changing world of html, as new tags are constantly being added and the editors can't keep up to the rapid change of the language.
Browsing for Local File Links - When creating links the local drive can be browsed which means you don't have to keep track of those long path names.
Limited URL listings - There are a limited number of URL's built in to the dialog box used to enter links.
Difficult for users unfamiliar with HTML - HTMLed seems to assume that its users already have knowledge of HTML. The buttons do not provide affordances as to what their functionality will be.
No support for HTML 3.0 - Tables and the new tags are not available.
HTMLed does not support WYSIWG viewing which means you have to look at your page through a browser to see how it will actually look on the web.
The basics of HTMLed were reasonable to use, but some of the more complex tasks were very difficult to figure out how to do.
HTMLed is very difficult for users unfamiliar with HTML to learn, as it assumes a working knowledge of HTML. Some of the more complex tasks were tough to figure out
